RESPOND
Recognise · Exhale · Shift · Purpose · Open Up · Navigate · Develop Others
A practical sequence for noticing change, interrupting automatic reactions and choosing the next useful step.
RESPOND and the Four Pillars turn lived experience into practical language people can remember and use—during a difficult moment, throughout recovery, or while supporting someone else.
Recognise · Exhale · Shift · Purpose · Open Up · Navigate · Develop Others
A practical sequence for noticing change, interrupting automatic reactions and choosing the next useful step.
Reset · Reconnect · Rebuild · Rise
A broader pathway for creating stability, restoring connection and rebuilding identity, capacity and direction.
RESPOND is not a rigid checklist. It offers memorable prompts that can be used individually, with a colleague or across a team. In a hard moment, even the minimum—Recognise, Exhale and Navigate—can create a place to start.
Notice changes in your body, sleep, thinking, emotions, behaviour and relationships. Functioning does not always mean you are okay.
Create breathing room. Slow the moment down enough to reduce urgency and regain some choice.
Change your position, environment, attention or next action so you are not trapped in the same automatic response.
Reconnect with what matters: your values, family, health, team, responsibilities and the person you want to be.
Put honest words around what is happening. Connection reduces isolation and makes meaningful support possible.
Choose the next useful step—personal support, professional support or a backup option if the first path is unavailable.
Use what you have learnt to lead, listen and support others without trying to diagnose or fix them.
The pillars are not necessarily completed in order. People may move between them as life changes. Together, they help keep recovery practical, human and connected to everyday life.
Create safety and breathing room. Support the body, reduce overload and make the next step more manageable.
Return to people, values, interests and routines that remind you there is more to life than pressure or the role.
Strengthen routines, relationships, identity and trust through small, repeatable actions.
Move forward with greater awareness and direction—using what you have learnt without allowing the past to define you.
Introduce memorable language your people can take back into work and life.
