Anthony’s Trauma Recovery: A Story of PTSD

In June 2023, Police News featured Anthony’s experience of living with post-traumatic stress disorder and his decision to stop struggling in silence.

The story explored the reality of sustained pressure, seeking professional help and beginning to rebuild through treatment, physical activity, connection and greater openness with the people around him.

Speaking publicly became part of that recovery—not because the experience was easy or complete, but because honest conversations can help others recognise change earlier and know that asking for support is a strength.

Recovery did not mean returning to the person he had been before. It meant learning how to rebuild with greater awareness, purpose and connection.

Not Pulling Any Punches

In 2023, Anthony Pymm stepped into the boxing ring at Crown Perth as part of a corporate boxing event, raising awareness of mental health and supporting WA Police Legacy.

The fight came during an important period in Anthony’s recovery. After struggling significantly in late 2021 and later being diagnosed with PTSD, he had begun rebuilding his wellbeing through professional support, physical activity, connection and a willingness to challenge himself.

Encouraged by long-time friend and former UFC fighter Soa “The Hulk” Palelei, Anthony took up boxing and committed to something well outside his comfort zone—preparing to step into the ring against professional boxer Daniel “Sen” Smith.

More than a sporting challenge, the event became an opportunity to speak openly about PTSD, recovery and the importance of seeking help. Anthony used his participation to challenge mental-health stigma while raising funds for WA Police Legacy and the families it supports.

The experience became another chapter in the journey Anthony now shares through Healing Behind the Badge.

Recovery isn’t necessarily about returning to who you were before. Sometimes, it’s about rebuilding who you become next.
